‘The Big Guy and the Marwaṛi Buffet’ - A Sạntali Tale
Translation: Rạnjit Kumar Hãsdak̓

This story relates to St.Xavier’s College, Ranchi. I sometimes used to visit one of my friends there. Then, one day he introduced me to one of his pals. His name was very nice, but he had been nicknamed: ‘Grand Dad’. If you would have seen this guy’s physique, I bet, you would have been truly terrified. He was as tall as a Palm tree with a chest like a barrel crafted out of a large boulder. His bulging biceps had the size of bowling balls and he had hands like winnowing fans. While introducing him, people used to say: he is the world champion in eating contests.

This was true also. While dining, he used to sit down with a huge pot used for kneading dough instead of a plate and any guy who was unable to finish his quota of boiled rice used to give away his left over portion to him, and he effortlessly polished off everything. Such a menacing person was this Grand Dad.

Then on one occasion, the hostel’s mess had closed down for some time, and all the boarders used to eat outside. Grand Dad used to accompany them, but obviously was in trouble, as he remained hungry all the time. If he was to satiate his full appetite it would have cost him a fortune. Finding him sad, someone advised him: “Go to the Marwari Buffet (an eatery run by the people from Marwari community – a North Indian community of traders), there you can eat your fill for Rupees 20, and, you will also get lots of varieties.” On hearing this, Grand Dad was overjoyed and thought: “Come tomorrow, and I will loosen my belt and eat like a p**.”

The next day, a Sunday, he went fully prepared to the Marwari Buffet. He sat down on a wide chair and hailed the waiter. “What have you got here?” he asked the waiter.

“Sir, first the chapaatis (a flattened Indian bread) with twelve kinds of vegetable curries would be served,” the waiter replied. Hearing of a dozen types of vegetables, he started salivating. Then a beautifully arranged Rajasthani platter was brought to him. He started gorging.

“Bring me more ... bring me more,” he ordered the waiter umpteen times. The waiter also got tired serving him chapaatis and vegetable curries and angrily told him, “Sir, now you will get the cooked rice, there are no more chapaatis.”

“Okey-dokey, no issue. You get me the rice,” he ordered the waiter.
Even after that, he continued to howl, “Bring me more ... bring me more”. The waiter kept running to and fro the kitchen and serving him and finally got dead tired. He wondered, “From where this voracious creature has landed?”
Much annoyed, the waiter handed over the huge serving bowl to our Grand Dad, “Here, take this ... eat directly from this.”

The Manager was watching the entire spectacle. He went to Grand Dad and bending down, whispered in his ears:
“Yo, Bro! Please don’t take any offence. You don’t have to pay the bill for today. But never set your foot here again! The Marwari Buffet is not the place for people like you!”
